Style of Cabinets
Cabinets are available in a variety of designs and styles from which you can choose the one you like. From the traditional style of frame with small doors to full overlay doors and full frame doors, there are too many designs and styles in the market. European style cabinets have full doors but they are frameless. It is important to see which type and design of cabinet you are buying and which one would you prefer. Make sure to ask for the one you want.
Species of Wood
As compared to old times, there are plenty of choices when it comes to selecting the wood species for cabinets. From oak to birch and maple to cheery and even plywood and apart from wood steel, there are numerous options to choose your material for cabinets along with the number of stains and finishes and combinations that can prove mind boggling.
Cabinet Paint
While mass produced and semi-custom cabinets are painted with a thermo foil laminate for wood, the expensive and custom cabinets are painted using high quality hard enamel paint. It all depends on the type of wood and the cabinets you are buying.
Finishing can range from very high gloss to small pebbly look. In custom cabinets, you can go for two color tones or rub offs where the second colors shows in areas that have the top coat rubbed off.
Cabinet Doors
Just like cabinet materials, there is also a huge variety in making and finishing of cabinet doors. Styles vary in different profiles, accents and designs from cathedral style doors that have an arch at the top to plain cabinet doors and even glass doors.
When you check out cabinets before buying, check out their doors to ensure that there is no gap between the joints or cuts. Check the doors if they are plump and lay flat and square to 90 degree corners. Check out the doors for any cracks in wood or the materials as doors are the beauty of your cabinets and if the doors are broken or damaged, it will spoil their looks.
Frames
It is important to ensure that the cabinet frame is sturdy and long lasting one. If the cabinet is frame is not strong, how will it support the heavy weights that will be stored in the cabinets.
Usually, particle board or plywood is used in making frames except the front frame that has to be solid wood to match the door. In some cases, the front of the frame will be veneer, a thin slice of finish wood laminated to a plywood substrate. However, in some cases, wood look vinyl laminate is also used for cheap cabinets. It is important to ask the shopkeeper regarding the frame of cabinets to ensure you are getting a quality product.
